Homemade Oat Milk Hot Cocoa

What is more comforting than sipping on a warm mug of hot chocolate, especially when it's homemade, dairy-free, and most importantly guiltless? Growing up, my mother always insisted on making homemade hot chocolate using the Hershey's cocoa powder that we had on hand-- you know, the one that came in a brown rectangular container, there was no alternative and instant cocoa made with water was a cursed no-no. This recipe, however, is my take on the classic version that I grew up on. Made with dairy-free, natural ingredients and topped with a nice chocolate oat milk foam. It's perfect for every holiday season, chilly evenings, or just any time you (or your children) feel like it.

Can You Really Oat Milk Hot Cocoa Taste Good?

Many people who follow certain dietary lifestyles can all agree on the one taste they miss — sweetness. This is especially true when it comes to homemade hot cocoa, we all grew up around the nostalgia, the holidays, all the feels. Any good hot cocoa recipe must contain excellent quality cocoa powder, reach for alkaline processed ones or Dutch-style cocoa to obtain that bold chocolate flavor. I go a step further by adding cacao chips for that increased consistency and real-decadent flavor, you don't necessarily have to do so, but it's a recommended add-on. The sweetness is naturally there from the oat milk, but depending on your preference, you can always add a tad bit of honey, maple, or agave syrup at the end.

Key Ingredients:

For this dairy-free guiltless hot cocoa, you'll need about a cup of Oat Milk, I preferably use Kirkland's Organic brand. One tablespoon of Dutch-processed Cocoa Powder, one teaspoon of Vanilla Extract, and one tablespoon of Trader Joe's Organic Completely 100% Cacao Chips or any dairy-free chocolate chip.

How To Make This Recipe:

  1. Fill a medium saucepan with one cup of Oat Milk, place it on the stovetop and turn the burner on medium-high.

  2. Add one tablespoon of Dutch-processed Cocoa Powder and one tablespoon of Trader Joe's Organic Completely Cacao Chips, or other branded cacao chip.

  3. Use a whisk or spoon to incorporate the items until completely melted and blended through.

  4. Add one teaspoon of Vanilla Extract, mix thoroughly.

  5. Continue stirring until steam begins.

  6. Lower the oven burners and use a milk frother to create a wonderful oat milk foam.

  7. ENJOY!

Variations:

  • Feel free to use any milk alternative or regular milk of your choice.

  • Add in your Raw Honey, Agave, or Maple Syrup per preference, 1 tsp at a time while cooking, for that desired sweetness.

  • Depending on your dietary lifestyle, add marshmallows, marshmallow fluff, whipped cream, or coconut cream to enhance your chocolaty experience.
